Mouth-Watering Recipe for Black Forest Cake

First mentioned in the 1930s and originating from a Café Agner in 1915 in Germany, Black Forest cake has a beautiful origin. The stunning cake is inspired by the Schwarzwald mountain range in Germany. The black forest region of Germany is famous for its cherry trees that are used to make cherry spirits known as Kirschwasser which was traditionally used while making the cake. Hence this cake was popular by the name “Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte” when it first originated. This rich, multi-layered chocolate cherry cake has grown in popularity since then. If a cake can have such a beautiful background, just imagine the taste that it will possess. 

Any dessert labelled as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is obliged to have Kirschwasser (cherry liquor) in it. This is used by the traditional recipe and many new varieties with Kirschwasser have evolved since.  The recipe that we are creating today is a simple Black forest cake with no Kirschwasser.

Ingredient List:

For the chocolate sponge cake:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil / Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the filling and decoration:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 cup pitted cherries
  • Chocolate shavings

Step 1 - Baking the Chocolate sponge cake 

i.) Preheat the oven and grease the cake pan 

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Meanwhile, Grease the base of a small round cake pan with butter/oil.

ii.) Mix dry ingredients 

In a medium bowl, take 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Mix all these dry ingredients to ensure that the batter becomes smooth and velvety.

iii.) Mix wet ingredients 

 Take another bowl and whisk together 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 large egg, 1/4 cup milk, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or unsalted butter), and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, mix all the wet ingredients until smooth and well combined.

iv.) Make cake batter 

Now take the bowl of dry ingredients and mix wet ingredients in it gradually. Take small amounts of ingredients at a time and combine until the batter is velvety and there are no lumps.

v.) Pour batter into cake pan 

Take your layered cake pan, pour the batter into the cake pan, and spread evenly to ensure the baking is even and the cake sponge rises evenly.

vii.) Bake the cake 

Bake the cake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. Check by poking a toothpick into the center of the cake after 25 minutes. If the toothpick comes out clean, your cake is perfectly cooked.

viii.) Cool the cake 

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the cooling rack for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Preparing the Filling and Decoration

i.) Make frosting 

In a hand blender or electric blender add 1/2 cup heavy cream and whisk lightly. Gradually add 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar to the cream and whisk for a few more minutes till the cream forms stiff peaks.

ii.) Clean and cut cherries 

 Take your cherries and remove the seeds. Take all the cherries and cut them into 2 slices each.

iii.) Make chocolate shavings 

Take your chocolate bar and using a knife make chocolate shaving by slicing the chocolate thinly into shavings.

Step 3: Assembling the Black Forest Cake

i.) Apply frosting between cake slices 

Take your cool and slice into 2 even layers when the cake is all cooled. Take a spoonful of whipping cream at a time and spread it evenly between your cake sponges. Arrange the cake, add whipping cream all around the cake, and cover the cake entirely with the whipping cream smoothly.

ii.) Cover cake with frosting 

Press your cake layers gently and add whipping cream to all sides of your cake sponge.

iii.) Decorate the cake 

Take your cherries and chocolate shaving and decorate the cake as you please to make it look tasty and appetizing.
